Jenny
Auburn, March 17th 1862.
My dear Mother,
I have been very
busy since my return, going
to see women and girls, inquiring
their characters &c, until I am
almost discouraged, if I find
one that knows how to cook
she is not honest, and the
honest one don't know much.
I went to see Mrs Avery
Birth: 1821-03-01 Death: 1890-04-02Certainty: Probable
, Saturday,
"Mary Case", is living with her,
Mrs Avery thought she cooked
very well, but she is obliged to
watch her constantly, in order to
have any thing clean, she says she
is untidy about her kitchen and
person, and some weeks things are
used faster than others, Mrs
Chedell
Birth: 1807-10-03 Death: 1874-03-11
thought she was inclined
to be a little light -fingered,
Page 2

in a few words, Mary (Comfort is the
name she is known by) Case is a good
cook, and has a good disposition, she
is inclined to be dishonest, and is
exceedingly dirty; do you think the
good qualities will overbalance the bad
ones? do you think that you will
take her – It seems to be a very
difficult matter to find a good
cook here – Harriet
Birth: 1807 Death: 1888-08-20
, was here last
week, now I have a young girl
Unknown
who
was Libbies
Birth: 1834-03-20 Death: 1892-02-25
nurse-girl at one
time, she liked her very much then,
she wants to learn to cook, and
knows some thing about it, I
think we will get along very well,
for a while –I went to see
Catherine Kelly
 Death: 1897-04-24
, she feels very badly,
grieves so much, that she is almost
sick, she says she cannot work–
Harriet is here washing today
Mary
Certainty: Possible
, is just as full of mischief
as she can be, I think Fanny
Birth: 1844-12-09 Death: 1866-10-29
Page 3

would have laughed if
she had seen her face, after she
had eaten a dish of strawberry
preserves she found in the closet
in the ante room, she looks so
funny, when you find her in any
mischief – I hope Fanny has
not made herself sick again,
by this time, I hope you will
have pleasant weather, and will
keep well – Aunty
Birth: 1803-11-01 Death: 1875-10-03
was quite sick
Saturday, is well now. I expect
her up here to tea – my family
are all well now. I was very
glad to see Anna's
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02
letter, I will
send it back – Please tell me
what to do, in regard to Mary
Case, I told Mrs Avery I would
let her know as soon as possible
I wish you could bring a good
girl with you. Mrs Day
Birth: 1824 Death: 1881-01-22
has
sent to Utica for one. Will
Birth: 1839-06-18 Death: 1920-04-29
is
very well, With much love,
Jenny –

Mary Case, has just been here, to
know if you wanted her the 1st of
April, as that she might speak to
Mrs Avery, I told her I had been
writing to you and would let her know
as soon as possible, she is a nice
looking girl – Mrs Avery told me
that she would keep her through the
Summer if you did not take her —
