Washington Feb. 13th
My dear Son,
I have tried in vain so
far to get a report of the Sec. of
War
there are none here and I have
not yet succeeded in getting one
from the Capitol. We have been
here now three weeks – Our friends
the Mellen's made us a visit
of one week, which I think
we all enjoyed – then Mr
Wharton
Wharton left us yesterday, the
same evening Caroline Schoolcraft
came – Mr Hollis White
came with her from N. York – Mr
Schoolcraft
that the two little boys
are
well cared for – Anna is
well, and has accomplished
[right Margin] We have snow 2-3 inches deep this
morning –
[top Margin] Your Father's speech is yet to be
made – I will send you a copy –

There has been much discussion in
the Senate of the Army bill – the
Republican party generally with some
of the Southern Democracy were
against the increase of the Army –
Your Father
of the matter – as a military dem-
monstration had been made in Utah
he thinks it better to send men
enough there to carry it out.
enough to prevent those who are
there now from falling an easy

prey to the enemy – such the
Mormons having declared
themselves to be – He thinks a
sufficient number of troops to keep
the Mormons in awe would be
more likely to prevent bloodshed
than the handful who are there
now – so much inferior in numbers
to the Mormons – I know my
feelings influence my judgement
somewhat in this matter, but his
view of the ^it^ matter certainly seems
the more humane – We both
agree that it would have been
better in the first place had
the Mormons been controlled,
or some attempt made to control
them, more in consonance with
the spirit of Christianity than
military force. The final vote
has not yet been taken upon
this bill – It provides for 2
additional companies for each

regiment. A vote which was
considered a test vote gave the
Bill a majority of one –

Penn. being the only Republicans
who voted for the Bill – Many
of the Republicans (particularly Mr
Hale
with your fathers course – Mr Hale
said he considers it a "fall, equal
To that of Daniel Websters
All of which is of little consequence
so that a man has the approbation
of his own conscience –
I send you a letter written by Mrs
Stanton
Journal on the rejection of the
Lecompton Constitution by the House –
It will be some time before it
comes up there again – The vote
has not yet been taken in the
Senate – they are at present
engaged in debating the subject –
The President
acceptance of the constitution –
