Sunday August 25th 1861
My dear Father
Friday evening
much to our surprise Eliza
made her appearance – we were
all glad to see her, and have
kept her busily engaged answer-
ing questions since she came –
Her arrival was very fortunate
for Aunt Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
who had just
parted with her girl

.
Thank you for the motto from
the President’s

very handsome one – tell Anna
Birth: 1834-03-29 Death: 1919-05-02

I am much obliged to her for
the picture she sent me of your-
self – I like it all very much
except the head– I recognise
it as a copy of Leutze’s
Birth: 1816-05-24 Death: 1868-07-18
painting –
the more pictures I see the lessI

they look like you – & I always
come back to Inman’s

The shawl Eliza brought me
is a wonder to us all – so much
work & so handsome– how very
kind it was of her – Tell Anna
we think the cap she sent Mother

very pretty.
I suppose Mother & I will go to
Washington – I do so wish
you could come home – if only
for a very short time – you
must need the respite —
The same night Eliza came
your letter to Mother & the
copy of your letter to Lord
Napier
Birth: 1819-09-19 Death: 1898-12-19
came – I like your
answer to him very much —

a bud ready to open– Sarah

and Mary Titus
Birth: 1846-01-11 Death: 1913-03-14
are both
away yet.
The seals you sent me while I was gone
came safely– but one– the Spanish
which stuck fast to the seal on the
outside– I am very glad to have
those seals– Jenny

the two pieces of music which Eliza
says were sent to you– which she brought
home– We thought the words to
“God Save the President” very good –
All send much love
Your affectionate little girl
Fanny
