Saturday Jan 12 –
My dearest Sister,
I intended to have written
earlier but have written more frequently
to Henry than I anticipated and I have only
just so much strength to employ – You have
undoubtedly seen as I did the death of
Cornelia in the Journal – I could scarcely believe
that it was our sister Cornelia – it is a severe
affliction for her family – so totally unexpected –
Probably none of her brothers feel it so acutely
as Henry – they were devotedly attached to each
other – I received a few lines from him yesterday
he says “I cannot write about this dreadful
bereavement – Dr Canfield wrote on Friday evening
night last, that Cornelia died that evening of the
Quinsy – that she was conscious of her situation
and died with resignation – This is all that is
known to me – There are four precious orphan
babes – What shall I write to the Dr concerning them.”
This was the whole of his letter – poor Henry
how I wish I could be with him in this season
of sorrow – No definite arrangement is of course
yet made about the time when we shall go -
Pa is at home yet – talks about going next week
which is altogether uncertain – I wish I could

see you for I am wholly unable to write the half
I wish to say – I am getting along slowly
but still suffer with nausea faintness and
palpitation of the heart – We were glad
to hear you got home so comfortably – We
have a very amusing letter from Augustus
describing the proceedings of the 1^st – but it
has all been forgotten in the sorrowful intelligence
which followed – Tell Frances that Freddy
is talking to Chitterbob who has usurped my
easy chair – he was very lonely after you
left as were we all – I will try to write
again early next week – your own Sister
